Japan is a fascinating destination. You can find a seamless blend of old traditions and new technology. Beautiful landscapes are just a short train ride away from sprawling and crowded cities. From bustling cities to ancient temples to tranquil gardens, you have numerous attractions to choose from that suit your interest.
Popular cities to visit include Tokyo for its shops, restaurants and museums, Kyoto with its beautiful temples and Osaka, the third largest city in Japan. If you are interested in Japanese culture you can visit Buddhist temples like the Golden Pavilion or Himeji Castle. If you are interested in outdoor activities you could visit a Japanese hot spring or take a trip to Mount Fuji.
The best time to visit Japan is during the months of April, October and November. In April, the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. In October and November, the climate is warm and the autumn leaves are spectacular. Generally, airfares and hotel costs are lower during these months too.
To visit Japan, Canadian and American citizens do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Japan does require visitors to get finger printed and photographed when they enter Japan. All visitors must fill out a Customs Declaration form for their baggage.
Nearly all major airports in USA and Canada offer flights to Japan. Transportation within Japan itself is convenient and varied. To travel from city to city, many tourists use the Japan railway systems. Investing in the Japan Rail Pass is a convenient way to save on travelling expenses. Additionally, Japanese Rail is extremely reliable. Other options include buses, taxis, car rentals and domestic ferries.
Accommodations in Japan come in a wide variety of styles and prices. It is good to be aware that many hotels list their prices as “cost per person” rather than “cost per room”. Accommodations are available in various styles, such as traditional inns or ryokans, Western-style hotels, bed and breakfasts and even hostels for the budget traveler. For a unique experience, you can even stay the night at a capsule hotel in which guests stay in small capsules.
Although some Japanese do speak English it is always good to learn a few Japanese phrases before leaving on your trip. Also keep in mind that if you wish to travel around Japan via train pack lightly since most trains have little room for large luggage.
